In recent years,  a myriad of massage spa centers have emerged in the market place as people believe that they have more leisure time to indulge in some of the nicer things in life. Regular massage spa centers can be found everywhere so discovering a totally different massage spa center is exceptional especially if it offers something that sets it apart from the regular ones. And just this weekends, after a stressful week from work, we decided to visit and experience a massage in Balay Hilom Spa.

Balay Hilom Spa

Balay Hilom Spa is a massage center that promotes and supports the traditional way of Filipino healing known as “Hilot” as well as other Indigenous massage techniques from Luzon all the way to Mindanao. These are methods and techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. Located just in FBR Arcade in Katipunan just across Ateneo de Manila University, this is a must try experience.

From this quaint little spa center, you will never expect to see something wonderful inside. The interior of the place will take you back to the province-like lifestyle. Its ambiance is so good that it releases you from the stress of the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila.

Aside from the super charming interior design of the place, another notable thing about this spa is its friendly and accommodating staff and their great service. Upon entering their premises, we were greeted with a smile from the front desk staff and were gladly accommodated. While conversing with the staff as to what should be the best massage for us for that day, we were offered an aromatic cup of tea that smells familiar, tastes sweet but you can never guess what it is, unless you ask them.

Right after the masseus finished washing our feet with a warm water, we proceeded to the room where the massage will be provided. We choose to get Balay Hilom Spa‘s signature massage which is the Sinaunang Ginhawa: Hilot Balay Hilom for just Php 450. It is a deep tissue massage that increases blood circulation, improves breathing and frees muscles from “lamig” or pulled muscles. It is a 70-minute massage that uses more of the thumb technique.

The overall experience was great considering the serene ambiance, friendly staffs, affordable prices and the actual massage. We will definitely go back here and will highly recommend this place to our friends who would love to experience a traditional massage to set them apart from the regular massage in the market.

How to get there?

Best Option: Take the LRT-2 to Katipunan Station. From there, take the north exit and cross thru the overpass and walk for about 10-15 minutes to reach FBR Arcade Building which is just across Ateneo De Manila University. (You’ll know you are in the right building if you see a Yellow Cab Branch)

Another option is to take a jeepney ride from the University of the Philippines Diliman going to Katipunan. Tell the driver to drop you off at FBR Arcade. Landmark is the Yellow Cab Katipunan Branch that is in between Teriyaki Boy and Oracle Building.
