First Stop:
Beach Hopping at Sta. Magdalena

Sta Magdalena is the smallest municipality and is one of the many coastal towns in the province of Sorsogon, Bicol. This little town is not as well-known as the other municipalities found in Sorsogon but, believe me, when I say that it has masses to offer, from its majestic coves to its pristine beaches – seeing is believing!

Balading Beach Resort

Balading beach resort has a reputation for being THE place for karaoke lovers as well as being a great place to chill out (Filipino past time of drinking). However, be warned – among all the beach resorts in the Sta Magdalena area, it is here that there are strong underwater currents.

Marahlee Beach Resort

Marahlee beach resort or more popularly known as the Olango beach resort and has the clearest water of all the beach resorts in Sta Magdalena. The water in this cove is the most notable feature of this resort since and is as clear as the clear blue sky. The best time to visit here is during the summer as you should be able to witness the calmness of the ocean. But for those who love to surf, rainy season is the best time for you.

Suki Beach Resort

Suki Beach Resort is the most commercialized resort in Sta Magdalena. It is a well-known spot for foreigners and tourists alike because of its enticing beauty and accommodating staff. The resort can cater big groups and is ideal for a company outing or team building exercise. Contact this resort thru Suki Beach Resort .

Second Stop: Irosin,
The Home for Hot and Cold Springs

If you are already tired of island and beach hopping around Matnog and Sta Magdalena, try visiting the town of Irosin, the home of Hot and Cold Springs of Sorsogon. There are many resorts that offer hot and cold springs in the area but we tried the newly opened Tropical Paradise Resort.

Bulusan is another must visit place in Sorsogon. Why? Firstly, because it is the home of the beautiful southernmost Volcano found in Luzon, Mount Bulusan, and secondly, it offers some great attractions that allow you to feel closer to nature without having to spend a fortune, for instance, “One to sawa” Kayaking is only Php 100.

Fourth Stop: Barcelona, Sorsogon

Locally known as Danlog, the name was changed to Barcelona during the Spanish occupation, apparently because of its similarities to the Spanish Barcelona. Economically, the livelihood mainly revolves around coconuts, copra, and root crops such as sweet potatoes. Some attractions of note are the well-known Coral Church and the Barcelona sign and ruins.

Church made out of Corals

Fronting the Pacific Ocean, this place is known as the surfing spot of Gubat, Sorsogon. It is a giddy mix of creamy sand, blue water, and perfect waves that appeal to surfers. So dude, if you want to be a surfer boy at a low cost, try it here when you visit Sorsogon! For just 350 pesos you get to enjoy an hour session of surfing inclusive of a surfboard and competent instructor.

Surfer’s Canteen

✔ Entrance fee is 25/pax ✔ Tent pitching fee is 150 pesos per tent. You can also rent their Nipa huts with room and CR that costs roughly around 2,000 pesos (good for 8 to 10 persons)

✔ Food? No worries, they have a canteen that offers a delicious and affordable menu.

Option 1: By Plane- there are 2 airports in Bicol, one in Naga or Virac so pick the one that best suits your final intended destination. Book ahead as much as you can before your trip so you can take advantage of discounted fares and keep an eye out for flash seat sales as most local carriers go to Bicol. If you’re planning to visit Sorsogon, you’ll need to fly from MNL to NAGA. From there, hire a cab or walk outside the airport and hire a tricycle that will bring you to the bus terminal. You can either wait for buses bound to Sorsogon or have the option to ride a bus bound to Legazpi and from there, transfer to a bus bound to Sorsogon.

Option 2:  By Bus- In an ideal world book a ticket with the bus company of your choice going to Bicol Region two weeks before your trip. There are many buses in Cubao or Pasay that have trips going directly to different parts of Bicol region. You can opt to ride Penafrancia, Isarog, Philtranco, Raymond Bus or others. The fare is around 700-1300 one-way, travel time is 12-14hrs depending on the bus line you’ll choose and your destination.

The cheapest means of transportation from municipality to another is via Jeepneys. However, these are by no means around 24hrs so it is strongly advisable to ask the locals about the frequency of the services.

For our case, we opted to hire a tricycle for our whole day trip around Sorsogon (Sta Magdalena > Irosin > Bulusan > Barcelona > Gubat). For a less hassle and more convenient trip, you can contact Kuya Bener thru 09287938676.
